Addicted...

I think I need to join a Twelve Step Program for blogging because I am addicted. I want to be a part of a Blogging Challenge every month. Something to keep me focus and writing every day. When I think about it, as a math teacher, it is a little weird that I am addicted to writing, but it has become such a part of my day that I can't imagine not doing it!

I think about my nightly writing and how it has become so important..a way to talk about education, talk about math, my life. These are all important elements of who I am...the things that make me tick.

This week I started State Testing for math. I tell you that I am not in love with State Testing, but it is a necessary evil in my job. I wish there were other ways to assess students that weren't so crushing because if students don't "meet" they automatically think they "fail." This has been an especially difficult year...we have moved to Proficiency Based Grading (so just doing your homework doesn't cut it any more), have an especially sluggish group of 8th graders and the year at school has been beyond crazy...less discipline, more misbehavior, high teacher frustration!

So here I am, 27 days from the end of this school year...I both want to jump in the air clicking my heels and cry a bit. I want to mourn for what I thought the year could have been. It's like watching someones potential vanish into thin air. It has been painful. I am trying to hold out hope for next year. In June, I am attending the Model Schools Conference in Washington, D.C. There is a group of teachers and administrators going. My hope is that people are not going just to party or play on their iPads (or phones), but rather to attend, focus, and learn what we can do...what we need to do to turn our school around, to find the "Make it Happen" spirit come back.

I am finding my center, working to re-find the love of my job...I am a teacher who wants to make a difference...it is time to get my groove back and make it work...

  1. I'm a teacher and I know what you mean about re-finding the love for the job! Going to conferences is a great way to do that! It gets harder to find as I get older, but I'm determined not to become one of those 'old fart' teachers just enduring until retirement...
